Nestled on the shores of the Solway Firth, you will find Shore Gate House B&B. A beautifully preserved 17th century mill house with stunning views across the waters to the Scottish coast.
Not only is the area designated an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB), it is immensely popular for global tourists as the official start or finish to the 84 mile Hadrian’s Wall trail.
The village of Bowness on Solway has much to offer, whether it’s relaxing on the coastline, reading, painting or enjoying a well earned celebratory drink at the end of the Hadrian’s Wall Trail.
Bowness-on-Solway is a magnet for twitchers (birdwatchers) at all times of the year. With its natural mosaic of saltmarsh, peatbogs, farmland and wet grasslands. This rich area provides homes for a variety of native wildlife including ducks and geese in the winter and breeding waders dragonflies and peatbog plants in the spring and summer months.
Despite the sleepy appearance of the local area it is in fact steeped in History. Those with an interest in history will be overwhelmed by the Roman legacy, the Roman Fort of Maia that the village was built upon and who could miss out on the very western end of Hadrian’s wall believed to have ended outside Shore Gate House!
Also important to the area are the stories of the Border Rievers and the historical links to King Edward 1st his armies and battles against the Scots in particular Robert the Bruce.
There are two amazing licensed premises only a 3 minute walk from Shore Gate House, providing great food and drinks to help you unwind at the end of the day. The village also caters for those who choose to take tea and home made cakes in the local tea rooms.
Shore Gate House has large shore side gardens where guests are encouraged to enjoy the peacefulness and watch some of our breath taking sunsets.
